The W.A.R. Project
Potter Street Elementary - Bainbridge, GA

The students of Potter Elementary School went to W.A.R. against waste. This special group of students has been responsible for collecting more than 14,000 pounds of paper in the first three years of the W.A.R. (We Always Recycle) program. In addition to running the school's paper and plastic recycling programs and the composting program, this group of K-5 students also maintains the school's outdoor classroom area. This classroom has attained the national certification of "Schoolyard Habitat". The special classroom is utilized to teach students practical gardening skills.

The students of Potter Street Elementary had two primary objectives. First, they wanted to increase the degree of environmental stewardship in their school by establishing a recycling program. The group also wanted to work simply to beautify their community. The elementary school makes its playground and outdoor classroom areas accessible to the surrounding community. The property is used for baseball games and other community events.

Potter Elementary School is the top recycling school in all of Decatur County and has also been recognized by numerous organizations for its outstanding efforts. Some of the awards include the 2000 Weyerhauser Excellence in School Recycling Grant, the 2001-2002 PET Plastics Recycling Award, and the National Gardening Association's Youth Garden Grant. The school began the project with two industrial-size dumpsters, but now only requires the use of one. The students of Potter Elementary School have learned a valuable, tangible lesson in waste reduction.
