One
of the world's largest nonprofit scientific and educational
organizations, the National
Geographic Society was founded in 1888 "for
the increase and diffusion of geographic knowledge."
Since then it has supported scientific exploration and
spread information to its nine million members worldwide.
The Society enters the 21st century with added purpose:
to encourage better stewardship of the planet. Using
vehicles that range from its flagship magazine NATIONAL
GEOGRAPHIC to National Geographic Channels to its
Web site, the Society continually seeks to engage its
readers, television audiences and online visitors in
global adventure. Public service efforts also represent
an important part of the Society's mission. Concern
for the preservation of the Earth and its life provides
focus for its sponsorship of scientific research and
exploration.
